Through a partnership between the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the University of Iowa, scientists from both schools are to expand their research and development in the field of dental health.

The University of Iowa’s international programs awarded Azeez Butali and Maria Hernandez a Global Research Partnership Award.

Dr. Butali is an associate professor in the Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine, while Dr. Hernandez is an associate clinical professor in the family dentistry department and chairman of the college’s committee on international affairs and programs.

According to an Iowa press release, these awards are intended to “help initiate or expand new or existing international partnerships and generate pilot data, with the aim of building a sustainable research relationship and laying the foundation for externally funded programs.”

The award includes funds of up to USD 10,000 in particular and will help to strengthen the ongoing research partnership between the University of Iowa in America and UNILAG in Nigeria.

Scientists from the University of Lagos Faculty of Dentistry will visit the University of Iowa for 8 weeks and work in the Butali Laboratory for Oral Cleft Genetics and Genomics to generate preliminary data in oral cleft research for our future NIH grants.

There, these visiting lecturers will also act as a source of information for dental students in Iowa by interacting with them in a series of oral presentations and one-on-one interviews organized by the College of Dentistry Committee on International Affairs and Programs.

Dr. Hernandez represents the International Affairs and Programs Committee as co-investigator of the award.

The university added that the partnership will help Iowa dental students, faculties, and staff learn about the practice of dentistry in developing countries. In addition, the dental industry is exposed to international experience, the global perspective of the College of Dentistry is expanded, and opportunities for business trips and other cooperation efforts are opened.
