Be patient

Patience is the key to great landscape shots. There are a number of small elements that can change a photo from perfect to average. Whether you are waiting for the clouds to clear, the road to be empty, or the sun to shine from the clouds, patience is important. Make sure you have a little more time at your location and check the weather forecast so you can plan your shot as early as possible.

Wear a tripod

The tripod is an essential part of landscape photography. Most landscape photos are taken in low light conditions (sunrise and sunset), and a tripod is required to maintain sharpness. The same applies to long exposures, for which a tripod is absolutely necessary. But even if you regularly take pictures at high speed, a tripod for maximum sharpness is recommended. Use a remote release mechanism to keep the camera steady.

Use the best light

Light is extremely important in landscape photography. A great scene, but bad light can ruin a photo. In general, the best light for sunrise and sunset photography is the well-known “golden hour”. However, you can choose lighting conditions that best suit your scene. There are amazing landscape photos taken on stormy or cloudy days.

Maximize the depth of field

In landscape photography, you generally want to focus on as much as possible. The easiest way to do this is to set the aperture to a larger value. Remember, the larger the number, the less light enters your camera. so that tripod and remote release are really practical! Of course, you can also experiment with a shallow depth of field. Creativity is always good in photography.

Choose the right place

The best landscape photos show a view or location in a way you have never seen before. Go one step further to highlight your photos. Go to a place that is not as popular, or take a photo of a popular place from a different perspective. Plan the place and time carefully in advance. Arrive a little earlier than planned to set everything up and leave some room for error.

Use filters

Filters are another device that is important for great landscape photos. Polarizing filters are great for improving colors or minimizing sun reflections when photographing water. ND filters (Neutral Density) are useful during the day when you want to shoot with slow shutter speeds. Graduated ND filters compensate for the exposure of sky and ground. UV filters are sometimes used to protect the lens, but use is not recommended in extreme circumstances (i.e. during a sandstorm), as even the highest quality will affect image quality.

Plan your composition

Planning your composition is the most important step for a great photo. There are many techniques you can use. If the sky is boring, you don’t want it to take up too much space. Use the rule of thirds and the leading lines to get the audience’s attention. Think of both the foreground of the image and the background. Pay attention to the overall balance of the picture. Look closely at everything in your frame. You don’t want a stray branch to protrude from one side or half a bush at the bottom of the picture.
