It’s so difficult to get away as a farmer. Every time it was a catastrophic event. Then when we tried the last time, we just turned to go home even though we paid for tickets and rooms in advance. Finding a farm sitter you can trust, rely on, and who is familiar with your farm is the key to relaxing on a short break.
WALK DURING THE SLOW SEASON: Do not walk while you have large gardens that become weeds during your absence. Make sure that no live births or hatches are due soon. Make sure that all young animals are healthy, strong, and old enough to be alone for hours. If possible, have a veterinarian examine you before departure.
We lost animals and destroyed personal property. Drunken parties – no kidding. I found two pairs of underwear on the floor. People we don’t know were invited to our home by people we hardly knew but knew maximum recommended. We really trusted them after they came out this summer and neutered an animal for us.
Our prohibition sign was run over and found in the entrance on the way back to the courtyard. We found serious animal neglect when we got home unexpectedly early. No water, hay, or room to roam. Your dog shit on our beautiful braided carpets, which then had to be thrown away. It turned out that they were forbidden to have animals in the city.
Call references; their family, school, work, city and animal control officers.
Coop doors were probably left open the entire vacation with half the herd GONE. Eaten! It’s like telling predators that there is an easy choice from now on. We had to move them to a new stable. They were thin, had injuries from constant fighting with rats that let themselves in, and ate my young birds that slept on low beds. Yes, rats will make it easy, even if it’s live. Not cool.
The real, unforeseen rally complicates every time we try to leave it all behind. Just when I feel like the stars have aligned, the universe says I should let go, relax and go my fun way … My mother-in-law had broken the pelvis a week ago so that Dad could not sit. So I went looking for a farm sitter and another place for our teenage son – he doesn’t feel quite well overnight. But my replacement milk girls couldn’t milk alone and another one just wasn’t available.
From now on I had to train more locals, family members and friends to milk. It’s handy if you have an emergency plan that is ready to go anyway. Two summers ago I was in the hospital for ten days and my beloved husband had to learn to milk with his huge hands. He is the best.
Find a farm sitter on site. , ,
Do not tell everyone that you will be leaving on certain dates!
It’s like people are announcing a vacation countdown on Facebook – burglars and crawlers are ready, I’ll leave my house unattended. Your profiles will surely contain photos of your house inside and out. Personal pet is annoyed for the good.
It only asks for trouble. Now there is not only the possibility that your property will be stolen, but also that your farm sitter will be put in an unsafe position. It is a terrible idea to post vacation photos on Facebook WHILE YOU ARE ON HOLIDAY. I know it’s tough. I was there myself – but I waited impatiently. Send photos to friends and family that you will post later.
Make sure your farm sitter is able to stay to himself and not tell the world that you are leaving. Finding a farm sitter is a major hurdle of trust. If you are really concerned, you must always report to the police for a review. If you really want to be a control freak, call your local animal welfare officer and let them know in advance. Then ask him to do a scheduled check-in. Let them know how they can get you, your vet and a replacement sitter under control. Let your veterinarian know that you are gone too. Depending on how much you trust your neighbors, ask them to report anything that is lazy.
Practice dry runs and then do a farmer shadow one night before for the last time. to adjust very clear house rules. Daily check-in helps you relax! If you are as bad as me, ask for photos. Live game cams are a great tool and serve as signs. We now have a hidden camera inside that is connected to WiFi and records in real time and sends it to my husband’s phone. Our WiFi network is set up in such a way that all new telephones or laptops that connect are also reported to us on the go. Use technology or get someone to help you set it up – who doesn’t make fun of it. Give them the wrong dates.
