If applying for an Australian visa is on your 2020 to-do list, there’s no better place to start than a free True Blue Migration Services authorization check.
Last year, new regional visas, designated area migration agreements, a new temporary parental visa, and major changes to the Working Holiday Visa program were introduced.
If 2019 is just around the corner, 2020 could be another roller coaster year for migrants.
So what changes?
Traffic light bulletin
The Traffic light bulletin is being prepared by the Ministry of Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business, It is a consultation paper that is used by the government to determine which professions visa paths should be granted and on which list of qualified professions they should be placed.
It indicates roles for possible removal and recommends the introduction of reservations and status changes for others.
As the name suggests, the Traffic Light Bulletin is color-coded. Professions are red when recommended for removal, orange when marked for switching between lists, and green when a profession is intended to be added to a list of occupations.
The last traffic light bulletin was published late last year. The professions recommended for deletion from the list of short-term qualified professions are:
• Hair stylist
• Gardener (general)
• career counselor
• Vehicle trimmer
• machine mechanic
• NEC keeper and trainer
• Wood machinist
• Community workers
• Instructor (Open Water)
• Gym trainer or teacher
A number of popular occupations have also been selected to allow a possible transfer from the middle to the short list, thereby giving people in these roles access to a permanent residence permit. These include:
• Wall and tile layers
• Automotive electrician
Other jobs have been marked for transfer from the short-term job list to the regional job list.
Keep in mind that the bulletin is not a final government decision. It is a consultation paper and contributions can be submitted by stakeholders who are not satisfied with the bulletin recommendations.
Recommendations can and can change. However, if your profession has been marked for removal, it is obviously a good idea to apply for a visa sooner rather than later.
It’s no secret that the Australian government wants to see more migrants in regional cities.
A number of policies and new visa programs have been introduced in the past year to encourage the change of popular hubs such as Sydney and Melbourne designated regional areas,
The regional visas – Division 491 and Division 494 – are relatively new and demand is not yet very high, but applications are likely to increase by 2020 if employers and applicants become familiar with them.
Both visa options offer PR options via the new permanent residence visa (qualified regional) 191.
International graduates studying in regional areas have also received a boost after the government announced a new policy that offers additional post-graduate employment rights.
It has been announced that some international graduates will be eligible for an extension of the current EU two-year rework period from 2021 Subclass 485 temporary graduate visa,
These agreements come into force next year and require permanent residence in a regional area.
Those who have studied on a regional university campus in a metropolis are also eligible to participate.
Whether graduates receive an additional year or two more depends on where they studied and where they live.
• Graduates who have studied and lived in Category 2 areas can apply for an additional year of employment after completing their studies. Category 2 areas are “Cities and major regional centers of Perth, Adelaide, the Gold Coast, Canberra, Newcastle / Lake Macquarie, Geelong, Hobart, Wollongong / Illawarra and the Sunshine Coast”.
• Graduates who have studied and lived in Category 3 areas can apply for a second 485 visa for another two years. These areas are “regional centers and other regional areas”.
Migration program 2020
The government is permanent migration program The upper limit has been set at 160,000 for 2019-20.
The seats are assigned to the following streams:
Skill Stream – 108,682
• Family Stream – 47,732
• Special eligibility – 236
• Child (estimate as there is no fixed upper limit) – 3,350
Around 25,000 of the available places are reserved for regional visas within the skill stream.
The upper limit has been lowered from 190,000, which is a significant reduction.
AAT increases by 34 percent
The past year has been a busy year for the Migration and Refugees Department of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT). Applications rose 34 percent year over year.
According to the AAT’s latest annual reportthere are around 60,000 applications.
In September last year, the Morrison government reduced the backlog of appeals to improved application review and PR, and temporary visa refusals.
Immigration Minister David Coleman said that “the screening processes are much stronger than those under Labor,” adding that the government’s immigration program “is based on integrity and quality.”
If these words match, then the trend towards rejections and more AAT appealswill likely continue.
