The idea of learning analytics has become popular in higher education, but many educators are not sure what is involved in the practical implementation of these technologies. The following article provides an overview of the area of learning analytics for teachers and educators, for whom expectations regarding the use of these technologies continue to rise. We also argue that those who work directly with students need a functional understanding of the learning analytics landscape to use their own expertise.
