What differentiates Sony from other music companies? Rob Stringer explained exactly that.
Stringer is both Chairman and CEO of Sony Music and CEO of Sony Music Group (the parent of Sony Music and Sony / ATV – the latter is managed by Jon Platt).
British managing director Stringer (pictured) today (December 19) sent a solemn message at the end of the year to the employees that MBW had just received.
In it, Stringer explains why "Sony's creative and business strategy this year has been as comprehensive, dynamic and complex as any other year in our history."

With the end of the calendar year 2019, I would like to think about the trip that we have taken together this year. Our creative and business strategy this year has been as comprehensive, dynamic and complex as every year in our history.
The establishment of the Sony Music Group with the collective power of our world-class music and music publishing companies has enabled us to share new growth and coordination opportunities while maintaining the unique identity of each company. The exciting arrival of Jon Platt as head of our global publishing department has also strengthened our larger company.
On the music side, from the beginning of the year we achieved our goal of dramatically expanding our squad by 30 percent in order to meet the requirements of the increasing worldwide distribution of music via streaming platforms. Every market in the world can now find its own local content. As a truly global player, we need to reflect this and continue to find real worldwide artists and songs. Hits can come from anywhere, for example from the countries that produced global hits for us in 2019, from Korea to Holland to Colombia!
"On the music side, we achieved our goal from the beginning of the year to dramatically expand our squad by 30 percent to meet the demands of the increasing worldwide distribution of music via streaming platforms."
The success of our artists and their repertoire has motivated us all. This year we were able to promote some exceptional and fresh talents.
Of course, SMG artist Lil Nas X dominated the number. With the innovative genre mix "Old Town Road", Sony / ATV songwriter Ed Sheeran took first place in the worldwide single charts. SMG artist Camila Cabello has streamed her duet "Señorita" more than a billion times this year. Apache 207 has dominated the German streaming charts in recent months. And the list goes on, right up to Harry Styles, who is expected to have album # 1 in several major global markets this week, and Arizona Zervas for most of this month in the US Spotify charts No. 1 is. We are delighted that Mariah Carey's long-running hit "All I Want for Christmas Is You" is currently not one. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Childish Gambino was awarded the record and song of the year at the Grammys. Rosalía won the best album at the Latin Grammys. Maren Morris and Luke Combs won top-class awards at the CMAs. Tom Walker was recognized as the best new artist at the Brit Awards and Tones and I won major awards at the ARIAs.
The incomparable Rihanna is part of the Sony / ATV family and we have hired the superstars Ozuna, Kang Daniel and Nicky Jam for long-term recordings.
With the legendary Barbra Streisand, we have also expanded our long-term catalog arrangement. Kygo continued his relationship with us as an artist and through a label deal, and now sells Kondzilla, one of the major Brazilian entertainment companies.
As part of our growth strategy, we have further expanded our presence in all emerging markets. This shows the new, more creative headquarters in Beijing, which opened earlier this year. This growth will continue to be a priority for us next year. This is shown by the fact that we continue to expand our content studio network worldwide and create new creative spaces in every region of the world.
"The incomparable Rihanna has joined the Sony / ATV family and we have signed up with the superstars Ozuna, Kang Daniel and Nicky Jam to conclude long-term hosting contracts."
We have more digital partners than ever, and we produce more audiovisual content than ever, which has expanded our potential opportunities for content distribution.
We are determined to expand our business beyond the core of the record and publishing business.
Our merchandising department has taken over important companies, so that we now have the rights of Led Zeppelin and P! Represented NK as well as many other artists. We recently signed the North American rights to the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix's worldwide trademark rights.
We have launched a comprehensive podcasting strategy that includes joint ventures with some of the world's leading providers of audio content in the field.
We continued to look for maximum efficiency and transparency with new tools and portals such as Real Time Royalties and Cash Out. Our new, artist-friendly hosting contract templates have been very well received by the industry and we have continued to invest aggressively in our data and analytics capabilities.
As Rolling Stone magazine recently highlighted, One Sony's concept is no longer just an idea. We do television programs with our sister TV division from Sony, such as the recent Brad Paisley TV special. We provide exclusive music content for our partner PlayStation games like Death Stranding. We sponsored Pharrell's innovative music festival in Virginia together with all of our Sony partner companies. This type of partnership will only grow in the future.

It is important that we have all made significant progress in the key areas of culture, diversity, inclusion and human resource development within the Sony Music Group. We are constantly improving the balance between gender and diversity in our workforce. We have further modernized our family-friendly services and programs. We created employee resource groups to give our team members room to get together and represent important issues. We have strengthened our global training programs to create better internal development opportunities for you and to make our communications more strategic, both internally and externally.
We must continue to strive not only to become bigger in all aspects of our business strategy, but above all to become better so that we are geared towards sustainable success for the next decade and beyond. With your collective talent and hard work, we build a creative entertainment company of the future and give our artists, songwriters and developers the partnerships to be successful in this developing industry.
Thank you for your incredible support this year and I wish you and your families and friends a happy and peaceful Christmas.
See you in the next decade!
