The ultimate guide to correctly tagging YouTube videos : MARKETING

Youtube is one of the largest marketing channels, but is mostly underused by brands. According to StatistaYouTube reached 1.9 billion users worldwide in 2019.

If you are preparing to boost your video content via Youtube (which you should probably do), you will find detailed instructions on YouTube tagging here.

According to YouTube, Tagging is one of the most important ways to place your video in YouTube search results:

Tags help users find your video when they search the site. When users enter keywords about your tags, your video will appear in the search results.

YouTube also takes into account user engagement (such as number of views, shared views, and user “retention”), but tagging is *first* Increase your video’s placement in YouTube search results (giving you a good chance of also taking a place in the universal results).

A scientific (but still useful to start brainstorming) Approach to classifying YouTube tags (pdf) groups all tags as follows:

  1. General relationship between tag and video content:
    1. Tag identified What is the video at its primary and objective level – This distinction does not require any specialist knowledge (e.g. a video of a cat with the tag “cat” or “animal”).
    2. General category or genre defined by YouTube (e.g. comedy, entertainment, music)
  2. Specific relationship between tag and video content:
    1. Tag identified which video is from, Familiarity or something existing knowledge is required to make this connection (it can be names, locations, venues, etc.).
  3. Tag only useful for a minority of users, specific people, or groups
    1. Refine the day (Tag that cannot stand on its own – only useful if it is considered part of the larger tag set (e.g. episodes of a series of videos identified by a number)
    2. Self-reference tagging (e.g. “my dog”),
  4. Irrelevant / not useful tags (These can vary from eye-catching and misspelled tags to conjunctions and prepositions.)

Obviously, all three classes of tags should be considered when ranking for different types of searches (navigation searches, general searches, category searches, etc.).


Brainstorm YouTube tags

Most YouTube professionals suggest adding as many relevant tags as possible (of course, that doesn’t mean you need hundreds of them, but deleting the tags Dozen of the most important is very important for your ranking). YouTube doesn’t limit the number of tags, which is a good sign.

I agree that we have to use some tags, but the focus is on “smart” or “Educated” marking:

1) Add your brand-specific tags

This comes first because it is neglected so often!

  • You * want * to rank in the YouTube search results for your own brand name.
  • You want your own videos to appear in Google’s general results.

So what you never want to forget is to reference your video yourself:

  • With your own name (the one under which the world knows you);
  • Your brand name: preferably in some variations, such as: [brand name]. [brandname] and [brandname.com]

2) Use YouTube Auto-Suggest

Next, play around with YouTube search results. Two things we want to do here:

  • See what YouTube suggests in the search (you want to rank for all of these words).
  • Identify some videos that pop up occasionally for important searches (especially in the standard “By Relevance” tab)

3) Use the YouTube Tag Generator

After you’ve collected all the relevant tags thoroughly, drop them into an Excel spreadsheet and use all sorts of sorts and conditional formatting to identify your best “key words” that you want to include in your tags.

For example, you can use the Find and Replace feature to highlight all cells with “Free” in yellow (read more about Organize your keyword modifiers <- "oldie but goodie"):

While you can play with the tools above to generate lots of keyword ideas, the main point of this step is identification Your most important key terms on which you can build, After all, you don’t want hundreds of tags to be added. Instead, you want to add the best.

Therefore:

  • Leave out stop words (especially article “a” / “the”);
  • Go with plural variant of similar sentences (This is usually the best choice);
  • Pay attention to what YouTube is suggesting to you (it is probably familiar with it).
