It's official: My 3-year-old has reached the stage with toy trains. To celebrate, he asked his guest grandparents to buy him the Thomas & Friends Deluxe Dino Escape Set. And as grandparents, they said no. I'm just having fun. Obviously, they said yes.
Forward a few hours, and we jostled ourselves with the Christmas crowds in Smyths Watford. After another 60 minutes, I was at home, taking several deep breaths and preparing for the fight with the track.
The good news? This was not my first rodeo. The little man has two more Thomas & Friends track kits, so I know a) that they are pretty easy to assemble, b) that the track sections are coded (eg CS, YRS, DB1) and c) the best Means of getting my son to "help" while working on his phonetics is to ask him to read those codes and find the next piece for me.
Apart from a brief slip-up when I placed the three pterodactyls upside down, the build went well and was done in no more than 10 minutes.

A few questions
Now there were only three questions left.
- Did we have AAA batteries? (For your information: You need four – two for the motorized Thomas engine and two for the motorized Nia engine.)
- What was the big arrows on the box about?
- What is the meaning of the Percy and James engines made of metal, which are also included in the set?
The answers
We had AAA batteries, and the big arrows indicated that two sections of the track turned, turned, and knocked the pterodactyls when Thomas or Nia stalled that segment. It's a really impressive feature that my son has described as "his favorite piece of track", and you can experience it in action in the following video.
All this leaves only the last question – what are the Percy and James metal engines that are also included in the set? I'm not sure, to be honest. If anything distracts you from this route, as the cars in the turning and turning section are not big enough to cope with a train having something on the back worse etc. etc. etc.). That means they will work well with the other Thomas & Friends track master sets that my son has, and an extra move is an added move, so I'm not complaining too much.
The quintessence
A small, fun and clever track master set that has a fantastic feature and is easy to put together.
