Your past is NOT your future – advice for my daughter when she starts kindergarten

Dear sweet baby,

I see these tears and they create tears in my own eyes … because I know the pain … the heartache that comes with change.
I feel the fear. I hear the sadness in your voice when you focus on your days in preschool – the thoughts of the teacher you worshiped and who worshiped you … and I can understand your concern about the unknown of kindergarten. But I promise you that your next teacher will worship you and you will worship them … most likely more than you have experienced before. Please be open to these new experiences because they will bring you great happiness as soon as you find that so much more will come.

However, this will not be the last time you try to hold on to your past because it has a certainty that the future does not have. The familiar memories of your pre-school days are reassuring, but they prevent you from seeing the beauty of your next steps … your steps to school for tall girls. It’s scary, I know. But please hear me when I saw … “Your past is NOT your future.”

Learn to hold on to the good through memories, to let go of the bad through teaching, and to accept the fact that it is your past for a reason … for that reason, you have bigger things to do. Sometimes we don’t let the past see what lies ahead. It’s hard to understand, but getting stuck in the past is like going forward with your back. You miss what’s in front of you because you focus on what’s behind you.

Today was a big day, my sweet girl. This moment will one day appear silly. You saw it and I know you will see that kindergarten is much better than preschool. You just have to estimate the process. It is a lesson that you will hopefully apply in every facet of your life as you grow up, because there will be a greater past that you will have to walk away from to see the bright light that is waiting for you.

Your tears are just the first of many that will change your life due to changes. If you willingly and openly accept change, you can run towards your future, appreciate your present, and help you see the past to find great joy.

Remember:
The past is your lesson. Let it go and let it be.
The gift is your gift. Embrace it, don’t miss it. Soak it up.
And the future is your motivation! The unknown can be anything you want. Don’t make it scary, make it magical. Use these lessons and these gifts to shape the future of your dreams. And please make these dreams bigger than these memories!

And in all uncertain moments, you know without a doubt that your mother will always be there to assure you that with every “this” time and “this” change you need exactly that to grow!
