Who can vote?

To participate in a general election, you must be at least 18 years of age and either have British or Irish nationality, or have "voting rights".qualifying Commonwealth citizenship. It is estimated that around 895,000 Commonwealth citizens are eligible to vote.

Qualified Commonwealth citizens

A qualified Commonwealth citizen is someone who is a citizen of one of 53 Commonwealth countries and has permission to enter or stay in the UK. This includes citizens of the Commonwealth who are resident in the UK, for example, to work or study, have a valid entry or residence permit, or who have received refugee status or any other form of residence permit.

Interestingly, Zimbabweans are also allowed (with permission to stay) even though Zimbabwe is no longer a Commonwealth nation. People seeking asylum are not included as they do not yet have a residence permit.

So, if you are from Zimbabwe, Pakistan, Nigeria or any other Commonwealth country and you are planning to stay or leave, you can vote.

You can check that complete country list here, But remember – you must be registered if you want to vote, and you have only until November 26 at midnight to register.

Registration for voting

If you are not registered for vote, you have no say in the person you represent. So register! Registration for voting takes only 5 minutes online if you have your address and Social Security number at hand. If you do not have or can not find your social security number, do not worry – you can register anyway. If you do not have a fixed address, you can still vote. And if you do not come to a polling station on election day, you can vote by mail or even invite someone to vote.

Find out about the registration and voting in the Apply for the Migrant Vote website

Where should I vote?

You must vote in your local polling station (unless you vote by mail). If you are not sure where it is, there should be information on your survey card. You do not need the card or any other badge to vote (as long as you are registered). With your postal code you can find your local polling station via the Where do I vote? website,

Obviously, we will not advise you in this regard. You must make a choice between your local candidates who represent a political party or sometimes act as an independent party and belong to none of the parties.

The Who can I choose? The website is a great place to learn more about your PPCs. Simply enter your zip code, click on the button, and you will find a list of candidates in your area. Then, under each candidate, you can click the "Learn more" button to find their contact details and links to their social media accounts, and to learn more about what they say and what they stand for.
