It is no surprise that many working women do so with the hope of future promotions or opportunities. However, if you work overtime, hoping that someone will consider you for a new project, you should consider that strategy.
I often meet with women who work overtime without receiving any extra pay or recognition, and my question is, "What is your goal?" Some respond that it is only the culture of their organization. Working beyond 5pm and working weekends is what they need to stay afloat.
If progress is your goal; Before you expect to be in front of everyone else and leave last night, you need to create a vision.
Long work with vision
Have a vision – Long working hours are a springboard for many. Have an idea of where you want to be effective next, and make sure you express those interests with others. This vision often motivates you, and when you share it with others, others can use it to make it happen.
"There are no secrets to success, it's the result of preparation, hard work and learning from failures." – Colin Powell
The most important person with whom you can share your vision is your boss. Make sure your manager understands that you are willing to spend the time to be considered for new challenges. If you do not voice your vision, you run the risk of management assuming that you only work long hours.
Long working hours lead to feelings of guilt
Of course there are personal disadvantages when working long hours. You can not be in two places at the same time.
Guilt is given – Even as you work to support and advance yourself and the people you love, you are guilty of missing out on important events and activities. One woman once said that she was dating the people she loved and asked her to list 1-3 things that were important to her in a six month period. She took this list and asked for those days off or, in some cases, shortened her schedule or traded with a colleague so she could be there. She said that she would not be able to attend many other events, but work to set priorities that were important to the people she loved.
Make sure your family understands the vision that requires your long hours of work. If you work towards this common goal, the short-term events that you hope will hopefully lead to a better life in the long run.
Do not neglect your health
One of the challenges of women's long working hours is that they neglect their own health. We have to make sure that we take care of ourselves.
Treat yourself – You work hours, take your time out, or bring a snack you love, or listen to podcasts or videos that inspire you during your commute or break. Your energy level is crucial, and it's important to find ways to stay motivated and happy to increase your impact and momentum!
As with a business meeting, plan your "I-time" so that you can look forward to something.
Long working hours are often a matter of course. However, make sure that you are specifically working overtime for a specific purpose.
