Are you looking for ways to cheaply store smaller items in cabinets with decorative storage boxes, boxes and baskets in your home? Do not settle for stylish plastic containers and boxes. You can turn manageable baskets that you've found in a second-hand shop for a penny into really cheap decorative storage baskets to stylishly organize your home.
My falling self begins to surface. You know when you want to clean up everything in the house after the summer and are ready to enjoy the cooler months of the year in the house. I call this process "To increase the cozy factor" of the House.
The organization of our homes is never once and done. It is a continuous process to make the contents of cabinets, cupboards, cupboards, shelves and drawers more clear.
I organize all the time, always looking for better arrangements to improve the organizing efforts so far, especially if they are not working.
This is the case with the white sideboard that I put in my living room in the spring.
I rinsed the contents of what I wanted in the cupboard and put things in stacks. It looks well organized in the photo, but in real life it's hard to find a CD track, and when I pull one out, the entire stack slides out of the cabinet onto the floor.
Two weeks ago I had to drive to Columbia, SC. It is the closest town to me and is about 45 minutes drive on the Interstate. When I returned, I followed my phone's GPS to get home. I needed a track I had never ridden before. As I drove and looked for my next turn, I passed a small building that looked like a second-hand store, with lots of trash outside.
You know, I love to drive and thought to myself "Shall I stop, YES or NO?" It was getting late and I did not want to get stuck in rush hour, but my curiosity got the best out of me and I turned around to visit the new second-hand store. I was glad that I did that!
The small shop was filled from top to bottom and the best organized small second-hand store I had ever entered. The prices were just right and the owner of the store could not have been more cute. You could tell she was proud of her shop and made every effort to make it very pleasant.
I came out with some white jugs, a big Pyrex ribbed glass bowl with a white rubber lid (looks brand new) and baskets – 6 of them for a whopping $ 3. That's a lot of cha-ching in the box office, which I do not mind. 🙂
Rectangular storage baskets can be found in stores such as aim. household goods and more, but their price tags can range from $ 9 to $ 19, depending on their size. Treated thrift baskets cost 50 cents for a dollar apiece.
You may think of the rural decor of the 80s when you see such treated baskets, but read on to find out how to turn them into decorative storage baskets.
If you remove the handles on the baskets … .voila! Stylish storage for little money.
But I did not stop here …
I added labels to each basket using my labeling and attachment method, which I've written about here on the blog a few times before.
Labels are the best way to make sure things are easy to find and then put back where they belong when they're done. It's half the battle to keep everything in order. 🙂
How do I create a decorative storage basket from a second-hand store?
Needed time: 10 mins.
To remove the handle from a wicker basket, turn it into an elegant storage basket that can be used singly or even stacked for ultimate storage.
- Put the basket on the work table
Once the basket is on a work surface, cut off the handle on each side of the basket with sharp scissors or a pocket knife.
- Remove the handle base
As soon as the handle is cut off, vertical reeds still project upwards. These can be easily removed with a pair of needle nose pliers and a tug.
- Check if all shims have been removed
Look at the basket to see if there are perpendicular washers in the fabric. These are usually short pieces that come out easily. Depending on the basket, some may even be vertical. You can recognize them by looking closely at the basket weave pattern.
- Fill with your stuff
If you use a few baskets in a closet, play around to find the best fit. I tend to move mine everywhere and even try to put the sides of the baskets out when they fit better.
- Use all baskets
For most baskets you will not notice any damage after removing the handle. I have removed some handles over the years. The middle basket below is the first basket I came across, where there are still free spaces. However, you do not have to fix it because it is hidden by a label. 🙂
If I take something out of my cupboard now, I can simply slide a basket in and out to find the item you want without falling out of the cupboard.
How To Make Pretty Labels For Your Thrift Store Storage Baskets
I wrote a few posts about how to make and use my DIY labels. Here is the link to one of these posts for step-by-step instructions.
Attaching decorative labels to baskets
After making my laminated labels, here's an overview of how to attach labels to my second-hand shopping baskets.
- Find the middle front of the basket. I sometimes use the long side of a basket when it fits better in a closet.
2. Slide one brass fastener onto the hole you punched in the label and then through the mesh of the basket until the pointed ends of the fastener protrude from the other side.
Make sure you like the middle of the label. If this is not the case, align the tips of the fastener on the inside of the basket to secure the label.
Everything done and now ready to keep my cupboards, cabinets and drawers clearer.

To use small baskets to organize small objects
In my recent second-hand shop finds, I also brought home 3 flat baskets. I use these in my porcelain cabinet …
and in drawers to organize everything from teabags ….

How to clean a basket
If you find a basket in the second-hand store that is exactly the size you need, but looks dirty, you should still buy it because the baskets are easy to clean.
Fill a sink with hot foam water and let the basket soak for about 5 minutes. Next, use a scouring pad to go over the surface of the basket. Rinse the basket and place it in the sun until it dries.
I have now organized the white sideboard to my satisfaction with cheap decorative storage baskets.
It's time to search for a few larger baskets to organize the contents of my party cupboard.
