Retired General Ibrahim Babangida, former military president, has reacted to the outcome of the recent presidential elections in Nigeria.

President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressive Congress (APC) defeated Atiku Abubakar of the Democratic People's Party (PDP) in the presidential election on 23 February.

INEC stated that President President had received 15,191,847 votes against Atikus 11,262,978 votes with a profit margin of 3,928,869 votes.

In a statement he signed Saturday, IBB said he congratulated the Nigerian electorate for having acted peacefully during the electoral process.

"Unfortunately, because of violence in some parts of the country, lives have been lost and I want to express their sincere condolences to their families for the deaths of their loved ones," he said.

"I would like to congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR on his re-election as leading Nigeria over the next four years. I found that the election campaign was very stressful and the competition very sharp. That the president, despite the turbulent terrain of politics, has subjected himself to this process. Indeed, it is a clear testimony that he believes in the democratic process and ideals.

"The newly elected president should heal the wounds of the heated election campaign by embracing those who fought alongside him. The President must resist the temptation to see them as enemies; Not even opponents, but compatriots who simply disagreed on how best to advance our country.

"Now that the president has won his reelection, he should confront the most urgent problem facing Nigeria with renewed strength:" Uncertainty regarding life and property. "

"The rebellion of Boko Haram remains a threat to many Nigerians. especially in the Northeast region, while the two evils of abduction and armed robbery / armed banditry remain a major national threat. The President must give priority to these security issues.

"The country's economy must also receive the urgent attention of the president In formulating policies that improve the nation's economy, create job opportunities, and give hope to our young team members, a more creative approach is needed.

The President may want to consider the desire of sensible Nigerians to restructure and seek all constitutional means to transfer some powers of the Federal Government to the other levels of government.

"Let me express my admiration to the other candidates for the office of President."
