What could be the outcome of a mental illness 🚩 Mental illness

How is the treatment of somatic diseases? A survey is performed, the underlying cause of the pathology is detected, and therapy is prescribed. In a situation with mental illness, things are not so simple. Many states have no specific reason, for example, at the level of physiology. Because of this, it is impossible to correct the condition and bring the patient to a stable remission or be completely cured.

Most mental disorders either stay with a person for life or are β€œblocked”, but certain consequences remain.

It is customary to single out four options for the outcome of a mental disorder:

  1. full recovery, which is extremely rare;
  2. partial recovery with a mental defect;
  3. the transition of the disease to a chronic condition;
  4. death.

A similar outcome for a sick person is possible only in the case when it is possible to determine for certain the reason for which a disorder has arisen in the work of the psyche.

For example, full recovery occurs in patients with reactive psychosis (mental disorder caused by any major shock, psychotrauma), in people who have suffered intoxication (for example, alcohol), which caused a change in the psyche. Those patients who have manifested mental symptoms (hallucinations, delusions) amid any physical disease are also cured. As soon as the physical illness goes away, the state of the psyche gradually normalizes. So, for example, hallucinations can occur against the background of high temperature, but after recovery they pass, the consequences usually do not occur.

In fact, a person is completely healthy after undergoing a course of appropriate therapy. However, under the influence of the impaired work of the psyche, he develops persistent behavioral disturbances or the intellect suffers to some degree (becomes reduced). In other words, under the influence of the transferred mental disorder, a person changes, often becomes completely different from himself in the past. And such defects remain with him for life.

Such a diagnosis, unfortunately, is quite common. It, as a rule, concerns any severe pathologies or disorders for which it was not possible to establish the root cause (or it is not possible to cure it).

Such people are put on a lifelong record in a psycho-neurological dispensary, or they can become permanent β€œresidents” of psycho-neurological boarding schools. In some patients, long-term and persistent remission can be diagnosed, but there is no guarantee that at one moment, perhaps without a cause and external stimulus, the psychosis will not manifest again.

There are cases when mental illness leads to suicide. Suicide does not always accompany severe depression. To cause serious harm to yourself, when it is no longer possible to save, the patient may be under the influence of hallucinations (visual, auditory, tactile), due to the delusional condition. When stupefaction, for example, during complete disorientation in space, a person can step out of a window or throw himself under a car without realizing it.

Death against the background of mental pathology may occur due to exhaustion, failure of the immune system. Often, patients suffer from chronic, including serious, somatic diseases. Any infection may join, leading to a sad outcome.
