We did it – another complete orbit around the wonderful star in the center of our solar system! Given that man has not (yet) attained immortality, we have only a limited number of these sweet orbits that we can experience. So I try to remember regularly that life is short and you should get the shit out every year.
Twenty-eight was a hellish year for us. We traveled to Canada for a month in the winter, traveled to Europe for three months in spring, while Amanda was pregnant, and then successfully brought another human to planet Earth in late August. A wild experience!
The year ended with a 6% decline in the equity markets, but throughout most of the year, our total portfolio was at a high level of around $ 1,300,000. In this post we will be the super detailed Details of our expenses for the last two Years!

Hello new person!
Why did we have a baby when there are already 7.6 billion people in the world? All spit out carbon, accelerate climate change and ultimately contribute to climate change Sixth great extermination? Well, I think we thought it would be fun. Does that turn us to assholes? Perhaps!?
Most people do not want to read about pregnancy, labor and delivery, so I'll be brief: Holy Shit – Women Are Amazing!
The US healthcare system is in a terrible state – most people know that – but our experience with the ACA (also known as Obamacare) was just unbelievable. It's so great, we feel guilty about using it. We had a wonderful health service throughout the pregnancy and the total cost was around $ 4,300 (plus a few hundred dollars in vitamins and recipes):
- Deductible of insurance: 2500 USD
- Annual insurance premiums: 1800 USD
In all of our medical expenses last year, we were totally crazy about credit card churn and got a ton of points worth 20% cashback (YES – THAT is awesome if you do not already have credit card outrage, dear God, please check that Flow chart of credit card recommendation at r / agitated).
Finally, the ridiculous hospital bill during our stay for the birth and caesarean section delivery:
Our revenues and expenditures for 2018

Start value (per Zillow.com on 04.12.18) = 303,000 USD

Gross Expenditure in% of investment portfolio = $ 30,627 / $ 941,705 = 3.3%
Net Exposure in% of investment portfolio = $ 8,427 / $ 941,705 = 0.9%
To ignore the added value of our paid house, ours, Conservative The safe payout rate for 2018 was 0.9%, A strange year with the high income that we have earned, something we do not expect every year.
Earned income detail
On the income side we have done a lot 22,200 US dollars this year, The Internet Retirement Policy revoked our ability to use the word "retired" long ago, so we stick to the financially independent side of FI / RE.
Renting our primary residence for four months throughout the year helps offset our frequent travel, which we will continue to do in the future. We discontinued our short-term Airbnb rental of the basement last spring, in anticipation of a move by a tiny person. The biggest surprise was the distance counseling Travis did at the beginning of the year – about 145 hours in total. Small amounts of remote work with a high billing rate are the way to go!
IMPORTANT INCOME MATERIALS
IT consulting $ 13,500
House rental = $ 5,170
Airbnb hosting = 2,520 US dollars
Credit Card Churning (points converted into cash) $ 920

All praise for the above wonderful table should be addressed to Amanda! She's incredibly good with spreadsheets and really a delightful data analyst. If anyone has questions or suggestions on how we can improve spending on some of these categories, please comment below!
