The Federal Government states that although it is the constitutional right of former President Olusegun Obasanjo to support a candidate for election, his approval does not guarantee victory.

Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture, speaking on behalf of the government in Abuja on Monday, said that Obasanjo's candidate for the presidential election was being "roughly and thoroughly defeated".

"With due respect to former President Obasanjo, it is his constitutional right to support any candidate of his choice, and we urge him to vigorously fight for any candidate he wishes to support.

"He has not hidden his preference for PDP candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and we wish him good luck.

"But I want to assure you that your candidate will be completely and thoroughly defeated. It's not about approval, approval does not win, "he said.

The minister also responded to a statement attributed to the former president: "Only a fool will sit on the fence if his country is destroyed with incompetence, lack of corruption, insecurity and impudent impunity."

Mohammed said that he valued Obasanjo and was probably not properly informed about developments in the country to draw such conclusions.

"The facts are all there, that in three and a half years this government has done more than any other government.

Regarding corruption, the minister said that the government has introduced institutional reforms that have confirmed their sincerity and commitment to countering the threat.

"It's not about imprisoning people, but what action is being taken to tackle this endemic problem.

Take the example of the Treasury Single Account TSA, which was not initiated by this government. Only the Buhari government has the political will to implement it.

"Before we came in, there were over 22,000 government accounts at various banks.

"We've reduced it to one account since we came in. From 2015 to date, N8.9 trillion went through the TSA, which is due to transparency and accountability," he said.

The minister said the Buhari government spent more on infrastructure than the 16-year PDP administration, even with meager resources.

He said there was no state in the country without one or two infrastructure developments initiated by the federal government.

The minister said the government had commissioned the Abuja with the standard rail of Kaduna, while the 156 km long Lagos-Ibadan gauge would go into operation in March next year.

In terms of infrastructure, he said the government provided funding for five key infrastructure projects, including the Mambila Energy Project, the East-West Road, the Second Niger Bridge, the Abuja-Kano and Abuja-Lokoja-Okenne highways.

Mohammed said that the government's efforts to diversify the economy away from oil have brought fruits that have been found in agriculture, especially in rice production and the minerals sector.

Regarding power, the minister said the government has improved generation, transmission and distribution when it was hit in 2015 while Nigerians benefit from their numerous social investment programs.
