I know, we tend to think that robotic cars are a very young phenomenon, but the truth is that people have been imagining the consequences of AVs since the turn of the century. In fact, there is at least one movie that directly addresses the issues, Walter R. Booth1911 film, The automatic driver, All of our current concerns about autonomous vehicles are here: how will they interact with the police, will they drill into the crust of Saturn, and will they cause us to go underwater, surrounded by wobbly axolotls?

The movie is only six minutes long, so it probably makes sense to drop your surgical scalpel or whatever and watch it right away:

Interestingly, we see the method of making an autonomous vehicle in the use of a robotic driver, as developed by the inventor in his laboratory in the film. Actually suggested a similar approach Over a century later, you may remember.

For some reason, the inventor has a bride and a groom with him, and he takes them with him when he tests his auto mechanic in a car that I can not fully identify, but look a bit like that nobody else can identify another car.

A police officer pulls over the automatic driver, who reacts violently, and for some reason inventor and groom tie the policeman at the back of the car and soon after a dog pinches the policeman's ass.

Then they go to the moon, a nod Méliès' A journey to the moonand from there on to Saturn, where they populate and meet native subsatural beings, and then things get weirder from there.

This movie has pioneered animations and special effects on models, but more importantly, raises questions about autonomous vehicles that we still ask today.

How much work does Waymo do to prevent interplanetary digging or hauling of police with squeezed dogs?

Not enough, I bet.
