For about a decade now, BMWs have not actually had a physical dipstick to check the engine's oil. Instead, it uses sensors and the iDrive system to tell you the oil level. It's something that's bothered BMW Enthusiasts quite a bit, actually, as most of the gear-heads like to enjoy their fluids and their quality. It's also something that I hear constant complaints about old-timer family members every time. It's exhausting. Thankfully, that might soon end, it seems as if the BMW M850i want regain its dipstick.

A user on Bimmerpost Recently added some images of the 4.4 liter twin-turbocharged V8 under the hood of the M850i with a physical dipstick in hand. Right next to the oil filler cap, there's a little black plastic tab, which is actually the dipstick handle. (You can see the photos here)

We saw this earlier today but were not sure if it was real or not, as we had not heard anything from BMW about it, nor noticed it ourselves. Jalopnik felt equally as hesitant and reached out to a BMW spokesperson for clarification. Apparently that spokesperson is equally shocked but it seems legitimate.

BMW M850i quite soon, as well as the new BMW M5 Competition and some other new BMWs, so we'll make it a point to check for all of them. BMW is going to start bringing it back or if it's unique to the M850i. We just do not see it anymore, simply because the BMW M850i uses a variation of the same engine. So we do not see this being a one-time thing.

Maybe that's just wishful thinking, though. As gear-heads, we like to check our own oil, so this is very exciting to see.
