The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) announced on Thursday that registration for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for 2019/2020 will begin in December.

The Chief of Media of the Board, Dr. Ing. Fabian Benjamin announced this while approaching journalists during Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) promotional efforts in Abuja's Computer Based Test (CBT), NAN reports.

According to Benjamin, no fixed date has yet been set for the start of the registration.

However, he said that plans were underway to do so as soon as possible, as the board initially waited for the presidency's announcement to lower the exam fee, which was officially announced on Wednesday.

The Nigeria News Agency (NAN) reports that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved on Wednesday, from January 2019, the review of filing fees for exams from N5,000 to N3,500.

This was announced by Education Minister Malam Adamu Adamu after the meeting.

Benjamin said it was commendable what the president did because he was someone who would always have had the masses' interest in their hearts and ensured that no Nigerian would deny higher education.

"The president has been working overtime, expressing concern that the charges were high.

"Our consistent referral has proven that, in fact, something could be done. Even if the fees are lowered, exams can still be performed.

The President has taken this bold step, we will see what happens after this cut and, if necessary, Mr President will do so in no time, as he has concerns about the ordinary Nigerian on the street. "
