The next generation of the Mercedes GLS will be presented next year on a new platform with new engines and a Maybach version. New prototypes of the future big SUV have now been tested by Automedia.

As you can see in the following video, the new GLS is obviously embroidered with the latest form of design language from Mercedes and seems to be on the increase. In terms of design, the Mercedes GLS seems to put on a less strong appearance.

The new body is more stretched due to the lowered roofline. The frontend should be similar to the new GLE. Of course, the car benefits from the semi-autonomous technology that Mercedes-Benz has already introduced in the S- and E-Class.

The new Modular High Architecture (MHA) platform, which is reserved for Mercedes' large SUV and crossover models, forms the substructure for the new Mercedes GLS. With this new architecture, the GLS loses considerable weight in the model change. Of course, it gets lots of features while the new packaging gives the occupants even more space.

MHA also creates new options on the drive side. The new in-line six-cylinder engines will be available in the diesel flavor with up to 340 hp and as petrol with up to 460 hp, but also hybrid variants. The hybrid drive known from the S 560 e combines a three-liter V6 turbo engine with 367 hp and 500 Nm engine with a 90 kW and 440 Nm electric motor. In addition, there is a 9-speed automatic transmission, which integrates the converter, the clutch and the electric motor. In the S 560 e this powertrain offers a purely electric range of around 50 kilometers. At the upper end of the range are again AMG versions that put in this model generation on the proven 4-liter V8 Biturbo and afford up to 612 hp.

On the market in 2019, GLS will not only compete with a new-generation Range Rover, but also with a new competitor from its own country, the BMW X7. As a new version of the GLS series, the new generation will also be presented in a particularly luxurious Maybach version – similar to the Mercedes S-Class Maybach.
