Ford launched the F-150 SVT Raptor almost ten years ago with thunderous applause. The reasons were pretty obvious. Big truck. Ferris wheels. Pro-level suspension. Power. Most people just enjoyed the way Raptor was tickling the funny bones of our collective trucking ideal with an open face. the place in our brain where unavoidable, Pavlovian and instinctive impulses live. The Raptor is so id, it's Id.

Meet the Mini-ID, the new Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison, an off-roader packed with the vitamins and minerals you need to master your Tonka Flashback dreams. The ZR2 Bison goes even further off the off-road path than the already powerful ZR2. The question is, are all of the special equipment designed by American Expedition Vehicles (an outfit device for off-road equipment) work as intended when you are miles away from the road surface?

The ZR2 bison is in contrast to the F-150 Raptor, Ford has designed the Raptor to emulate the Trophy Truck class of desert racing. This means that it is suitable for high speeds in the terrain. However, it is not clear what percentage of off-road truck owners are driving fast off-road driving, let alone what's close to the speed of real trophy trucks. I rather doubt that Raptor owners burn their desert dunes at 95 miles per hour, complete with sandy tails of 15 feet in height.

In the meantime, the Colorado ZR2 Bison jumps into the market, focusing on slower, more frequent off-road driving on bad surfaces. It is designed for rocks and crawling, with an extra layer of protection for the small parts. The Bison mission statement is much slower than the larger Raptors, but it may be more realistic.

Chevy turned to AEV for certain bison weapons because the company could build them faster for small scale production without disrupting the regular business. In front, the Bison AEV steel bumper, the winch mounting plate, the large fog lights and another, subtle Bison grille differ from a pure ZR2. Large fender flares with AEV wheels and black wheels in the format 17 x 8 inches and Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires of 31 inches. The Bison rear bumper made of steel with integrated tow hook also comes from AEV.

But the really meaty stuff lives in the shade. Five boron hot-stamped sliding plates cover both differentials, the transfer case, the fuel tank and the oil sump. Chassis components common to the regular ZR2 include the Multimatic DSSV remote accumulators, electronically-blocking differentials, and the powerful cast iron control arms. Like the ZR2 Base, the Bison also has 3.5 inches of additional front and rear lane over the Colorado Z71 plus 2.0 inches more ride height.

Under the hood, bisons use the same powertrains as the ZR2. Buyers have the choice between a 2.8-liter inline 4-turbo diesel with 186 hp and 369 Nm of torque, which is combined with a 6-speed automatic transmission, or the 3.6-liter petrol engine V-6, the 308 hp and 275 pounds. ft or torque through a newer 8-speed automatic. The use of an older gearbox with a newer engine seems a bit outlandish. The diesel powertrain increases the lead by $ 3,500.
