Nissan has dismissed auto industry legend Carlos Ghosn as chairman after being arrested earlier this week on suspicion of financial misconduct by the Japanese automaker.

Ghosn was arrested on Monday in Tokyo by the Tokyo Public Prosecutor's Office after Nissan (NSANY) conducted an internal investigation that found "significant violations" for many years. The Brazilian-born executive has not publicly commented on the allegations.

In a statement on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Nissan said its directors, led by CEO Hiroto Saikawa, unanimously voted to remove Ghosn and another director, Greg Kelly, from their posts.

Kelly was also arrested by prosecutors in Tokyo after she was charged with misconduct by the company.
