Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of the state of Kano receives the title of best governor in health and education in 2018
The Telegraph newspaper capped Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State in 2018 as the best governor in health and education, despite unresolved bribery charges against him.

The award came at a time when Mr. Ganduje was accused of collecting $ 5 million from contractors.

background
The Daily Nigerian, an online medium, had first published a series of videos showing how Mr Ganduje collected bribes from contractors. Similar videos soon surfaced on the Internet, sparking national outrage and calling for an investigation of Nigerians.

Although the videos were also certified by internal PREMIUM TIMES experts, they were dismissed as "cloned" by the governor who then went to court to seek redress.

The court last week ordered the seven-member committee set up by the Kano State House of Assembly to investigate the allegations of suspending the lawsuit. Previously, lawmakers invited Daily Nigerian to defend the allegations he (newspaper) made in his paper.

The ruling followed a lawsuit by Muhammad Zubair, National Coordinator of a Non-Governmental Organization, Sustainable Democracy Lawyers in Nigeria, that the Assembly has no right to investigate the matter.

However, the committee promised to continue its mission despite the court order.

The chairman of the committee and the representative of Kano Municipal, Baffa Danagundi, announced in Kano on Tuesday the decision of the committee, while they informed the journalists about the court order.

Ibrahim Magu, head of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, last week ignored a question raised by the agency regarding the call for investigation. Mr Ganduje can not be prosecuted while in office, but he can be investigated.

Ayodele Fayose, a former governor of the state of Ekiti, was investigated during his office and taken up for questioning immediately after his resignation a few weeks ago. While Mr. Fayose is a member of the opposition People's Party, Ganduje is Governor of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Despite reproach honored
At Telegraph's award ceremony, Mr. Ganduje, then managing director of Funke Egbemode, said: "It's good to celebrate those who make a difference in our lives," in obvious reference to the governor.

In a statement by Mr. Ganduje's Chief Press Secretary to PREMIUM TIMES, Ms Egbemode was quoted as saying, "We believe that if we appreciate those who have done good, we encourage them to do more in life."

She added, "Education and health are two important areas of the world where successful governance and a credible development index are often measured and evaluated.

"As a accomplished politician and administrator par excellence, Ganduje realized from the beginning that he had to influence the lives of his people indelibly. And he has really done it with affordable health care and functional education. "

The general manager also acknowledged, "Ganduje firmly believes in the words of former South African President Nelson Mandela:" Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world. "

On handing over the award to the Governor on Saturday at the Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos, a former Minister of Mineral Oil, Don Etiebet, on behalf of the company, confirmed how Mr. Ganduje has transformed both the health and education sectors of the state of Kano. "

"The outstanding performance of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has highlighted him among his peers. While Ganduje understands the importance of education for the development of the state, he believes in a healthy population. So he did it diligently to see that he left indelible marks in these important areas.

Encouraged Governor
In a three-minute acceptance speech, the governor honored the award. He talked about the multicultural nature of the state and said that "we are the most populous state in the country and do not want to have a population that is our fault. We want to see that our population becomes an asset. No liability Therefore, we do our best in these and all other areas of this administration.

"We assure you that Kano will continue to excel in all areas of the state. This honor, as presented here, should encourage us to continue to build a stronger state with a viable economy and productive population, "he said.

Mr. Ganduje added, "We are grateful for this recognition as you receive this intimidating entourage on the podium."
