Democratic People's Party presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar says he will sell the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and retain only 10 percent of the company for the federal government.

Atiku said this in an interview with The African Report, a monthly publication.

Atiku, who had chaired the National Council for Privatization during his term as Vice President, said the NNPC had become more profitable.

Whether he would sell NNPC and keep 10 percent for the government, he said, "Yes, I want to go ahead. There is no doubt about that. The government should have a very low participation. Nigeria urgently needs funds to develop its infrastructure and other economic sectors. "

The presidential candidate of the PDP said Nigeria should have produced far more than two million barrels of oil a day.

He continued talking about the privatization of the national oil company and said: "Without a stable regulatory environment, oil and gas companies will find it difficult to invest more in Nigeria.

"At that time, we pushed for the adoption of the new law. We expected Nigeria to export up to four million barrels a day, but here we are still at less than two million barrels a day. "
