PHOENIX – Despite the headwind faced by today's Ford Motor Co., "it will work," automaker retired CEO Alan Mulally said Wednesday at a industry conference here.

"Ford, like everyone else, is trying to figure out what's going on and it's getting messy," said Mulally, 73, at the National Auto Auction Association annual meeting, where he was the keynote speaker. "It'll look messy because it's messy."

Mulally, who helped turn the company around a decade ago, retired from Ford in 2014, focusing on efforts by Ford and other industry players to provide new mobility services.

"You see everyone is working on the last mile issue," Mulally said. "These bikes are everywhere, I do not know if we'll make money from them."

It's not just Ford, he said.

"It's about everyone working on what the transport will look like," Mulally said. "And it will not be clear for a while, I think partnerships will play a really important role."

However, he expressed confidence that the answers will come.

"What I know is that Ford has the most talented people in the world, and they take care of it," Mulally said. "They know they are working on something really important, and we'll be there in the end, and we'll find out."

Mulally has not intervened in Ford's leadership change since leaving, nor in the automaker's current restructuring efforts.

In May 2017, Ford discontinued Mulally's successor, Mark Fields, and replaced him with current CEO Jim Hackett. In July, Hackett launched a $ 11 billion global restructuring of the company.
