The ultimate arbiter when it comes to determining whether a car is good or not is your butt. And maybe your heart too.

What it is not are numbers. Numbers – PS numbers, load capacity, lap times – are evidence, not conclusions. They can support an assertion, be profoundly interesting, and be proof of excellence, but they are not the excellence we sometimes claim.

And no vehicle is the better proof than the Vanagon. None of their numbers impressed. No part of it is revolutionary. Yet his combination of grandeur, modesty and charm has embedded him in the public imagination.

Hagery's latest video shows Tyler Hamersma's 1985 Vanagon Westfalia. Although Hamersma has been in sports cars all his life, Hamersma claims that few cars are as enjoyable as his Vanagon because it has as many square feet of space as PS.

The combination makes it a fascinating drive, and the excitement he sees from the people he drives by helps make much more than the sum of his numbers.
