The National President of the ASUU, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi

ASUU STRIKE – The Academic University Association of Universities says the federal government has not entered into a dialogue with the union, even though it notes that two-thirds of universities across the nation have joined the labor dispute.

ASUU's National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, who said so, added that, given the experience of the 2009 and 2013 agreements, the union was not surprised by the government's attitude.

He said, "We have our structure for observing and monitoring the strike. As we speak, more than two-thirds of our members have retired from the classrooms. Others said Thursday because we gave them two days to hold their congresses and question them. Therefore, the strike did not start at the same time.

"We are not surprised that there is still no dialogue between us and the government. In all our engagements with the government, except 2017, we have always gone through stages. The first step is that the government will ignore us. Second, they will say that we are telling lies. But if the lies are no longer hidden and the truth is no longer known, they will say we should come to a meaningful dialogue. "

The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Labor and Employment had not yet issued an official statement on the ASUU strike, which took place on the seventh day.
The Education Minister Adamu Adamu had called the union in a press conference to exercise restraint in their demands from the government.
The minister said the union's demands fell to the post of former president Umaru Yar & Adua in 2009, when Nigeria had not yet entered recession.
Adamu noted that the government would improve education funding as the price of oil on the international market rose and the economy performed better.
The ASUU president talked about the tears in the faculty at the University of Ilorin and Obafemi Awolowo University and said the union was not discouraged by internal institutional disagreements.
Ogunyemi said: "At the University of Ilorin, the authorities have undermined the activities of the ASUU for some 20 years. It is no surprise for us. You did not allow the recognized branch to work. They met with a group they know to be pro-management. For us, this group is illegal. They are not working within the framework and are not known to the ASUU National Executive Council.

"As we speak, the chairman and secretary of ASUU UNILORIN, whom we recognize, have been dismissed for objecting to the way the university is governed. But I can tell you that they do not go far. You can not go far. "
