BMW announced today that the Dingolfing plant will go into an expansion phase to help manufacture batteries and electric drives for upcoming models. The move will involve two stages, one for the batteries manufactured in Germany and sent to Oxford for the upcoming MINI EV, and another for the powertrains of all BMW Group models. The drives to be carried out in Dingolfing will be in the fifth generation in cars like the BMW iNext,

According to BMW, a "mid-double-digit million euro amount" will be invested in this process on an area of ‚Äč‚Äčaround 6,000 square meters in the west wing of the Dingolfing component factory. The money will flow into construction and equipment along with an assembly line. The first ones are currently being installed and will be tested in the near future. From 2020, the Dingolfing plant will also be the fifth generation of electric drive systems for the future electrified vehicles of the BMW Group, such as the BMW iX3, the BMW i4 and the BMW iNeXT.

"With the introduction of new models and a growing demand for electrified vehicles, we will significantly increase the production of electrical components in the coming months and years," said Roland Maurer, head of BMW Group's e-powertrain system planning and production. The all-electric MINI will be built from the end of 2019 in Oxford. The batteries for the car come from the new battery production facility in Dingolfing, the electric motors from the plant in Landshut.

Due to the significance of the Dingolfing plant for the future development of the iPerformance model, its name will change as soon as the new wing is finished. BMW decides to name it in the future as "BMW Group Competence Center e-drive production". Current and future contracts indicate cooperation with other battery manufacturers. Germans expect a sharp increase in demand for such parts, as the EV market will grow.
