DECLARATION OF THE DAILY NIGERIAN PUBLISHER / EDITOR AT THE INVESTIGATIVE CONVERSATION OF THE KANO STATE OF THE ASSEMBLY ON GOV. ABDULLAHI GANDUJE BRINGS THE VIDEOS PUBLISHED BY ONLINE NEWSPAPER

I, Jaafar Jaafar, am a member of the Board of Directors of Penlight Media Limited. The editors of DAILY NIGERIAN provide this statement in response to the invitation of the Investigative Committee of the Kano State House of Assembly.

introduction

The DAILY NIGERIAN has published a series of publications on the receipt of several videos by His Excellency, Kano State Executive Governor Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who is collecting bribes from some of his counterparts in Kano State.

Following the publications, we received an invitation dated October 18, 2018 with the reference KNHA / ADM / VOL .I / 04 from the Kano State House of Assembly, in which we were called upon to exercise its constitutional functions, as listed in Section to appear before him 129 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The letter of invitation also required us to submit a written statement containing the incidents relating to the investigation.

Below is the narrative of our understanding of the events in relation to the videos.

The videos

More than two years ago, a fellow entrepreneur complained to me that the governor had received kickbacks of 15 to 25 percent for every project run by contractors in that state.

We then agreed to attach spy cameras to his kaftan lapel so he could catch the brash act in hard evidence. He recorded at least fifteen clips, nine of which showed the governor's face, body, and hands, collecting bundles of dollars.

Before DAILY NIGERIAN publishes stories, pictures or videos on his website (www.dailynigerian.com), the publishers submit them to a review to verify their authenticity or otherwise.

For the video clips in question, our in-house technical expert, the editor-in-chief and the editorial consultant, confirmed that the videos are original and non-falsified content.

Experts from Amnesty International Nigeria, BBC and PREMIUM TIMES also looked at the clips and confirmed their authenticity before we went to press.

The first video was released on October 14, 2018 and consisted of two clips that appeared on two different dates, as shown in the videos themselves. The video showed that the governor received bribes from a contractor in foreign currency, in particular, the funds were denominated in US dollars. The video also showed his Excellency putting these funds under his flowing dress and putting them in an envelope.

We are prepared to share the content of the video without any form of editing, to assist the committee in its investigations and to share the full clips of the others that have been published in committee to fulfill its legislative function

We thank the committee that it considers it appropriate to ask us to comment on this matter before it

Many Thanks.

Jaafar Jaafar
Editor-in-chief, Daily Nigerian.
