The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has officially announced that its 24-year-old midwife Hauwa Mohammed Liman, who was captured by Boko Haram in May, was killed by her abductors.

In an updated report, Reuters revealed that the Red Cross said on Tuesday, October 16, during an interview session with Patricia Danzi, her regional director for Africa, that Hauwa's death was due to her not paying her ransom A ransom would be a regrettable precedent for another 16,000 of its employees in 80 countries around the world.

However, the Geneva-based aid organization said it was reluctant to pay Hauwa's ransom but pleaded with the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA), a faction of Boko Haram, to spare the brave relief workers.

"If health workers are caught or abducted, there is always a need, we are a humanitarian organization so we can not conduct such negotiations, so we always ask for unconditional release, and that's what we did.

We believe that there is no reason that could justify the execution of a young health worker. We are now in a time of sadness … Then we have to rethink what we can do. And the (safety) guarantees we can get. Because we want to give humanity a chance, we want to be there for the people who still need our help. "

Nigeria is the second largest operation of the ICRC in Africa, and its helpers help 80,000 mainly displaced people in the northeastern city of Rann. Liman and two other Nigerian assistants, Alice Loksha and Saifura Hussaini Ahmed Khorsa, worked in Rann when they were kidnapped by ISWA in March. Saifura was killed in September.
