Northwood University, a long-time Michigan-based car dealer and executive education center, said its president and CEO is retiring after 12 years at the helm.

Keith Pretty, 67, Announced Wednesday plans to retire on June 30 from the private university in Midland, Michigan, according to a press release from the school.

As Northwood's third president, Prette's tenure was marked by the campus's expansion of its home base and philanthropic and scientific growth. The total number of enrolled students is 3,545 and is represented at several locations in Michigan – Troy, Livonia, Grand Rapids and East Lansing – as well as in Cedar Hill, Texas.

"Northwood University is a special place, and I'm proud to have had the opportunity to serve this vibrant community of current and future leaders," Pretty said in the press release.

The university is preparing a private search for its new leader, open only to the Board of Trustees and faculty members. It is managed by Illinois-based Witt / Kieffer Inc.

Mackenzie Kastl, University Public Relations Director, said the closed search means that students do not know who the next president is until he or she is selected. The next leader will be appointed immediately after Prettys departure next summer.

"Publishing the names of candidates, even in the final phase, could prevent highly qualified candidates from considering this possibility," said Al Zehnder, Chairman and Chief Executive of the Internal Search Committee. "We believe this approach is in the best interests of the University and will enable us to gain the caliber of a President we seek."

Prior to Northwood, Pretty spent seven years as president and CEO of Walsh College in suburban Detroit, and twelve years as vice president of external affairs and general counsel at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. He also serves on the board of the Detroit Economic Club.
