… lambasts Jang, Plateau legislator on the silence

The new Civic Leadership Initiative (NICreL), a civil society organization, welcomed the recent call by the Nigerian Senate to the federal government to set up a commission of inquiry and intensify efforts to find Major General Idris Alkali (retired).

The group said the call for other Nigerians who have disappeared around the Dura-Du axis of the state of Plateau, where the Nigerian army has found the general's car and other personal belongings in a pond, is a welcome development.

NICreL said it was puzzled that Senator Mohammed Hassan of the Yobe South Senate District raised the petition calling for the Senate, while the three Plateau senators who were to help with the pond investigation were silent about the atrocities in their country State committed.

The group, through its national president, Rev. Samson Onwu, wondered why Senator Jonah Jang, representing the Plateau North Senate, has a closed mouth to the Dura-Du.

According to him, "after threatening to make the state ungovernable because it lost the power game and provoked a crisis to fend off its corruption process," Senator Jang has been encouraging several groups and individuals to promote the state of Berom Plateau Called to kill other ethnic nationalities.

"The missing general and the discoveries in the pond at Dura-Du are the result of these uprisings and it has been reported that several senior figures, including the Gbong Gwom Jos and Da Jacob Gyang Buba, are working with Senator Jonah Jang, either actively contributing Incite youth in the constituency or initiate a conspiracy of silence as Nigerians commute through the axis are killed and thrown into the pond.

"We call on all investigative teams set up by the federal government in response to the Senate's request, and investigate Senator Jang, Gbong Gwom Jos and any other person of interest connected to the pond in Dura-Du Also, find out what other places the bodies are being held by other Nigerians who were killed while traveling through the state of Plateau.

"NICreL appeals to the Senate not to be distracted by what has happened to General Alkali and the many disappeared commuters along the Dura-Du axis in recent years, since we know that pressure has been put on us senators not in to intervene because one of their colleagues was named in connection with the matter.

"The Senate's courageous move to demand an investigation is laudable, and we reassure through the various investigations that the legislature has dealt with in the past because we know that the murders in Dura-Du would be no exception to that Legislature must be empathetic in calling for appropriate sanctions for anyone guilty of killing Nigerians thrown into the pond.
