In an interview with Australian media, BMW Group Vice President of Product Management Carsten Groeber has confirmed what we have known for a long time – the new 8 Series family will not get one V12 engine, The 6.0-liter gasoline V12 engine was recently released in the M760Li and it has often been regarded as one of the most fun BMW power plants to drive on.

According to Groeber, the lack of a V12 in the 8 Series has something to do with the perfect weight distribution in the new Gran Tourer, and the V12's use will upset that.

"V12 is very heavy and we have a very good weight distribution with this car, so with the V8 with these chassis and powertrain technologies making the car the right sports car, in our opinion, a V12 will be too heavy," said groeber.

The BMW head of the product also mentioned that a plug-in hybrid version of the 8-series was unlikely at the time. He said that the car is perfectly set up so there is no need to drive a hybrid.

The top offering of the new 8 Series is the 4.4-liter V8 engine with 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, which is combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission that powers the newly revised xDrive four-wheel drive system and a rear wheel steering system.

The BMW M760Li xDrive V12 will be taken out of production next year

According to BMW, the M850i can reach 60 mph in 3.6 seconds, which is on par with other cars in its segment. For example, the Aston Martin DB11 V8 requires 3.7 seconds with slightly less power, the Mercedes-AMG GT S 3.5 seconds and the W12 Bentley Continental GT 3.3 seconds.

The performance of the BMW V8 is just as good as that of the competition models. Due to the new WLTP cycle, the V12 is currently not available in any other BMW, but could come back in the near future.
