Car keys stuck in the ignition

Have you ever been in a situation where you can not disconnect your car key from the ignition? It can be frustrating, especially if you do not have the time to relax and deal with it.

If your car key is in your ignition, it's good that you take things easy and find out the reason why it's stuck. If you aggressively turn the key back and forth, it may cause you to have more problems; the key could be broken in.

To avoid many problems other than a stuck key, you must know the reasons why it got stuck in the ignition.

Below are the 3 reasons why you put car keys in your ignition and how to handle them.

1. Shift lever not in parking position:

If the selector lever is not in park (P) position, do not waste your time pulling out the key. Automakers have programmed it that way. If the lever is in a position other than park, you can not remove the key from the ignition.

If you can not remove the key, make sure that the lever is in the park position. After switching to P, make sure that it is completely shifted to the position and not to the half.

2. Defective or damaged

As simple as it may seem, all these small edges and slight hollow lines that you see on keys are very important. Once the key is not what it should be, you may be struggling to release your key from the ignition.

Dirt or debris in the car can jam the car in the ignition. If you are in the habit of using your key multitasking, check it out to avoid all these problems. A perfect example is opening boxes with your key.

A damaged key – tear or worn – can also cause this problem. Check for cracks and creases on your key. If the key is already invalid, have it replaced.

3. Locked steering wheel:

If you are attentive enough, you must have noticed. When the steering wheel engages, it is difficult and almost impossible to remove the key. This is because the ignition cylinder locks simultaneously with the steering wheel lock. Steering is only blocked when the engine is off.

As soon as the steering locks into place, you must remove the key. You must deactivate the steering wheel lock.

Gently shake the steering while trying to remove the key. Also, make sure that the key is turned counterclockwise before attempting to remove it.
