Naomi Osaka is the first Japanese woman to win the US Open after beating her idol Serena Williams.

Osaka won the game in straight sets and beat Serena 6-2, 6-4.

However, Osaka's first US Open victory was clouded by controversy after Serena protested being punished by the referee.

At first she was warned about her coach, Patrick Mouratogloupointed to her. She told the referee Carlos Ramosshe never "cheats".

A few games later, she received a fine after breaking her bat. She called the referee "a thief" and claimed he had stolen a point from her and subsequently received a gambling penalty.

Serena called the referee and supervisor of the game and said the punishment was not fair. She said:

There are men out here who do a lot worse, but because I'm a woman because I'm a woman, will you take that away from me? That is not right.

Serena, after the match, urged the crowd to celebrate Osaka's win as she played well.
