Not only Roborace brings his self-driving racing car to the Goodwood Festival of Speed to take over the hillclimb event, but also another self-driving car will be present. And it's not a futuristic machine either.

The car is nothing more than a 1965 Ford Mustang, but a heavily equipped version of the classic Pony Cars. The Mustang is the result of a collaboration between Siemens and Cranfield University and the two plan to debut their efforts on the famous Goodwood Hill Climb. Like Robocar, the self-driving Mustang will navigate 1.16 miles through hay bales, Flint Walls and Forests on the Goodwood Estate.

The technology behind all self-driving cars is quite remarkable, but Siemens and Cranfield had a different job. The two had to take all Mustang components from 1965 and make sure that they could handle the precise control of on-board computers. For example, there is no electrically assisted steering or suspension tricks; The Mustang has all original steering and suspension parts. The teams then used Bentley Systems to develop a 3D scan of the track to alert the Mustang to its position on the course.

Jürgen Maier, CEO of Siemens UK and Ireland, said the self-driving Mustang should represent the past and future of the automotive industry. This year's festival seemed apt as it knew the 25th anniversary of the event. The Mustang also carries a silver livery to honor the silver anniversary of the festival.

Both Roborace and Siemens stated that their vehicles will be the first self-driving car to tackle the Goodwood Hill Climb. If we have to place bets, Robocar will probably be faster on the mountain with a 500 hp electric drive. A classic Mustang rolling up the hill on its own will certainly be a witness. The Festival of Speed opens on July 12th and runs until July 15th. For more coverage, visit our dedicated hub,
