The vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication technology has the potential to save countless lives and is approaching the mainstream, with BMW, Ford and Groupe PSA teaming up with the 5G Automotive Association to launch the first live demonstration of C-V2X technology carried out in Europe.

Essentially a high-tech combination of Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) Technology communicates the C-V2X system with vehicles from various manufacturers as well as with intelligent infrastructure such as traffic lights. The technology works across the ITS spectrum and has the ability to work without a cellular link.

The demonstration uses a number of different vehicles including the BMW i3. DS 7 Crossback. Peugeot 5008 and Ford Edge, The test was not limited to cars and crossovers, as BMW also provided a handful of them C Evolution Scooter, Each was equipped with Qualcomm's 9150 C-V2X chipset and software from Savari.

Thanks to the additional equipment, the different vehicles can communicate with each other and warn of possible collisions or dangerous conditions. This also occurs when the drivers can not see the other vehicle. Among the various scenarios that were shown were the electronic emergency brake light, the collision warning at the intersection, the warning of collisions in the traffic jam, the slow vehicle warning, the immobile vehicle warning and the warning of endangered roaders / pedestrians.

While many of the features focus on security, that's not the only benefit of the technology. V2X systems can communicate with brake lights and give the drivers a countdown telling them how long the light will turn green. This has the potential to improve traffic flow as drivers can be ready to accelerate even before the light changes color.

While C-V2X and V2X have a number of similarities, the first one is integrated into a cellular modem of a vehicle, which is also used by telematics and infotainment systems. The 5G Automotive Association says that this shared component approach means that C-V2X systems are more cost-effective than competing technologies and will benefit from "accelerated attach rates."

While the demonstration was just a test, the 5G Automotive Association says the technology could be operational by 2020.
