The attention of the management of the University of Jos was directed to news that are spread especially on the social media that the university has issued false conclusions of some graduates of its law program preparing for the upcoming convocation of the university.

According to these reports, law students were mistakenly awarded First Class Degrees as published on the University's Graduate Surveillance Portal, while actually completing lower grades of degrees.

For the sake of clarity, management would like to indicate that the graduate list on The University's website is a VERIFICATION PORTAL for students to review and accept or reject the information contained therein, as indicated on the URL (address). The intention of such a portal was to give students the opportunity to preview the preliminary list, to correct any typographical errors, make suggestions, and express criticism for future improvements. As clearly stated in the portal's instructions and procedures, participants must submit input to the preparation of an updated list of graduates as part of the verification process, and this is not the final or granting list.

Noteworthy is the fact that this initiative would be the first of its kind in any Nigerian university. Based on the information available to us, the Nigerian University has not yet provided information to the graduate students via the Internet to review and submit their submissions. This shows transparency on the part of the university and should be encouraged and not vilified.

Regardless, as this is the university's first use of such an interactive portal for its convening, some initial hiccups and unintentional errors are to be expected. Management would like to assure all stakeholders that during the current exercise some challenges have been observed, lessons learned, and corrections made to the website immediately. The university will continue to value the understanding and support of its stakeholders.
