Indiana Pacer's All-Star Guard Victor Oladipo officially became the pace-car driver of the 102nd Indianapolis 500 . He will head the field of 33 IndyCar drivers in the 1959 Corvette ZR1 2019 to start the race on Sunday, May 27th.
Oladipo played college basketball at Indiana University and entered the NBA draft in 2013, selected in the first round of Orlando Magic. He was traded to Indiana Pacers of Oklahoma City last year, averaging 23.1 points per game. His performance as Pacer earned him a place in the NBA All-Star team and he is a leading candidate for the NBA Most Improved Player Award 2017-18.
"This is a great honor for me," said Oladipo. "I'm so thankful that Indiana continues to hug me, from the University of Indiana to the Pacers and now the Indianapolis 500, the biggest race in the world, and I want to thank Chevrolet, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Pacers for giving me It's a great understatement how I feel that I can not wait. "
The 6-foot 4-inch guard will drive the 755-hp Corvette ZR1 Pace Car, which was unveiled last month on the famous Brickyard Range . The Corvette ZR1 Indy 500 Pace Car is Admiral Blue with red accents and red / blue / silver door graphics. The Corvette is equipped with the ZTK Performance package, which includes the tires of the High-Wing and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 as well as an 8-speed manual transmission with automatic shifting. The new ZR1 has a top speed of 212 mph and should more than meet the challenge of pacing the Indy 500.
"It'll be great to have Victor behind the wheel of the Corvette ZR1 from 2019, the fastest, most capable and most advanced performance production Corvette ever, "said Jim Campbell, vice president power vehicles and motorsport for Chevrolet. "I can not wait for Victor to experience this feat along with the energy and anticipation of all fans as he leads the iconic Indy 500 green flag."
This is the 15th time that a Corvette has served as an official pace car since 1978, and the 29th time a Chevrolet has led the field, dating back to 1948, when a 1948 Fleetmaster Six Convertible competed , No other vehicle has served as a pace car more than the Corvette.
"It's a great honor to welcome Victor Oladipo, one of the most popular sports figures in Indiana, who leads the field starting" Das IMS President J. Douglas Boles said, "Few NBA players drive faster and more powerfully than Victor, making him feel at home on race day at the wheel of the great 2019 Corvette ZR1."
