MacRumors has received renderings and alleged dimensions of the new iPhone SE from case manufacturer Olixar via the online accessory store Mobile Fun suggesting that the notch of the device is about half the width Than on the iPhone X, almost sure it's too slim to accommodate face detection sensors.
It is hard to imagine that Apple would offer the Face ID on the iPhone SE in the first place without significantly increasing the price. Including the feature on an iPhone starting at just $ 349, Apple would reduce gross margin and almost certainly take advantage of selling the iPhone X at $ 999 and up.
Olixar's renderings, which we're told came from China, also suggest that the new iPhone SE will have an iPhone X-esque display that stretches almost from edge to edge, surrounded by an aluminum shell with flat case sides and bevelled edges, similar to the current model and iPhone 5s.
With an alleged length of 4.7 inches and a width of 2.1 inches, the new iPhone SE would be slightly smaller than the current model. It is still suitable for one-handed operation, but offers a larger screen thanks to the full screen design.
The render images do not show the bottom or back of the device, so it's unclear if there will be a headphone Jack or a glass back cover for wireless charging. As expected, the device appears to have physical volume buttons and a side mute switch, as well as a physical power button in the top right corner.
The biggest question mark is how the authentication would work because the Home button is missing and the Face ID is not very happy. The new X20 Plus UD of the Chinese company Vivo became the first smartphone with an in-display fingerprint sensor earlier this year, but Apple seems to have decided against this approach.
Overall, this rumor is a sketchy one, but Olixar is confident enough in his Chinese sources to already accept pre-orders for iPhone SE 2 screensaver on Mobile Fun, so we share in the interest of the discussion.
Apple has not really updated the iPhone SE since launching in March 2016, it has doubled its available storage capacity, but rumors of an updated model have been contradictory in recent months. There are essentially two camps: one expects an iPhone X-style design and another expects a minor upgrade.
Last month, for example, a video shared on the Chinese social media site Sina Weibo showed an unpublished iPhone SE with an iPhone 5s-like design, glass back, top and bottom bezels. Touch ID and a headphone jack. However, it is quite possible that the device was a copy, as is customary in China.
