In the new Mercedes-Benz X-Class some people scratched their heads when they came out. The Stuttgart engineers saw potential in it, but then decided to hold the largest market for the segment in which they are playing and to make us even more confused. With the SUV madness conquering the world, Mercedes could find something here, and if the X-Class proves successful, other manufacturers could join in. Could the BMW X2 be a competitor for the premium pickup?

If you look at BMW's new sporty SUV, you'd think that might not be the case. The thing is, the rendering below is a fancy version of what might turn out to be the best rival for the X-Class. This is because the Mercedes is based on the Nissan Navara and thus significantly larger than the X2 . Therefore, the one car that would most sensibly be turned into a pickup would be the X5.

<p> However, the following rendering shows exactly what a four-seat BMW SUV with a generous bed in the back would look like. Since the X2 follows BMW's design philosophy closely, this could be seen as a preview of how an X5 could evolve if the Bavarians decided to go that route. And to be honest, it does not look bad, but is quite appealing if you ask me. </p>
<p> Of course, the car built by the Munich-based company was supposed to give up all the things that attracted complaints from people in the industry. The first to call the X-Class "out" was former BMW designer Chris Bangle, who had the courage to say that it did not inspire a premium feel, especially in the cabin. Then other executives came and said the same thing, from <!--noindex--><noindex><a target= BMW officials to Volkswagen, who all complained about the manufacturing quality of the X-Class. If that was not the case with the X2, would anyone be interested in a pickup version of the SAV?
