The Grand Designs Live The London show has closed its doors for another year – and once again thousands of people came to ExCel in London to get inspiration and training for their current or upcoming construction project. In our last blog we wrote about our pride in being invited to attend the Ask the Expert session that takes place during the show. For our latest article, our managing partner Douglas Brown offers his insights and perceptions of an event that included his contribution for the first time.
“Our entire business has been built to provide quality renovation advice to those who need it. Having the opportunity to do this at the prestigious Grand Designs event on a larger scale was really wonderful. The event was incredibly well organized and full of innovative manufacturers and designers. All of them present their products and approaches for future construction and renovation projects in a wonderful way.
The exhibition halls were full – but the Ask the Expert panel area was less. The opportunity to speak directly to experts from across the spectrum was insufficiently used. That was surprising in itself – but even more was the fact that only people who had suffered a serious loss thought about the insurance angle at all.
People who had an insurance problem now have their eyes open for the risks and weaknesses – and rightly wanted to protect themselves this time. But what about those who haven’t visited us? Like so many other renovators across the county, they’re at risk of future renovations.
We made our expertise available on three days of the show and had good conversations with over 20 people. I heard firsthand from a couple who had lost everything to their renovated property in a fire that wasn’t covered – and now has to work tirelessly to rebuild it without paying the insurance. They wanted to tell me their story, to tell me about the damage they had done literally and emotionally, and to tell me they wished they understood what was needed to be fully protected.
Thank you for having us Grand Designs Live. We had some very good conversations – but it was clear from face-to-face conversations with current and future renovators that there was a great lack of awareness of insurance requirements and techniques during a renovation. I was pleased to be able to teach the few that day, but for the many our work continues. I cannot repeat the risks to your renovation enough without the appropriate insurance. – Douglas Brown, May 2017
You don’t have to wait until the next Grand Designs show to ask our experts about your renovation project and likely insurance requirements. Call us on 08442 641200 to speak to one of our employees about your plans – we will be happy to advise you.
